Book I. SAMADHI PADA: Union with the Divine Self |
| |
| |
Chapter 1. Humble Beginnings |
| |
| |
With Humility (an Open Heart and Mind),
We Embrace the Sacred Study of Yoga. |
| |
| |
Chapter 2. We Are All Divine |
| |
| |
Yoga is the Uniting of Consciousness in the Heart. |
| |
| |
United in the Heart, Consciousness is Steadied,
then we Abide in our True Nature -- Joy |
| |
| |
At Other Times we Identify with the Rays of Consciousness
which Fluctuate and Encourage our Perceived Suffering |
| |
| |
Chapter 3. Rays of Consciousness |
| |
| |
Dividing into Five, these Rays of Consciousness
Polarize as Pleasant or Unpleasant |
| |
| |
The Rays Manifest as Knowledge, Misunderstanding
Imagination, Deep Sleep and Memory |
| |
| |
Knowledge Embraces Personal Experience,
Inference and Insights from the Wise |
| |
| |
Misunderstanding comes when Perceptions
is Unclear or Tinted |
| |
| |
Imagination is Kindled by Hearing Words,
Seeing Images or Experiencing Feelings |
| |
| |
Deep Sleep Allows us to Withdraw from Conscious Awareness |
| |
| |
Memory is when a Previous Experience Returns to Conscious Awareness |
| |
| |
Consciousness is Elevated by Abhyasa (Devoted Practice) and Vairagya (Remembering the Self) |
| |
| |
Devoted Practice, Abhyasa, Cultivates the Unfolding of Consciousness |
| |
| |
Abhyasa is Nurtured by a Sustained, Steady Rhythm and a Dedicated Heart |
| |
| |
With Constant Remembrance of the Self, Vairagya, all Yearnings Fade |
| |
| |
When Consciousness Unites, it Remains Clear and Unaffected by External Changes of Nature, the Gunas. This is the Ultimate Vairagya. |
| |
| |
By Cultivation Abhyasa and Vairagya, the Intellect becomes Keen, Reasoning is Clear, Bliss is Reflected to All, and Outward Identification Unites with the Supreme Consciousness. |
| |
| |
With Continued Awareness, we Identify Only with the Pure Consciousness Residing in the Heart |
| |
| |
Through Identification with Pure Consciousness, the Physical World can be Transcended |
| |
| |
Sutra I.20 |
This Identification is Enhanced by Faith, Dynamism, Intention Reflection, and Perception |
| |
| |
To the Dedicated and Devoted, the Divine Truth is Revealed |
| |
| |
Spiritual Consciousness Develops in Direct Proportion to One's Dedication |
